you don’t need to know what email is, we all use
it for communicating with friends and family and
even business contacts. What is important is how
you use email to its full potential and how you

Reliability is only an issue when things go
wrong, our task as an ISP is to firstly prevent
things going wrong and secondly to have disaster
recovery procedures which minimise customer
disruption should the worst happen. There are a
few things that can go wrong in any mail hosting
environment:
1. Data feed outage
Gconnect’s equipment is located in a data-centre
with multiple IP feeds from different suppliers,
which is ‘border gated’ giving continuous
service should one of the suppliers have an
‘incident’
2. Power outage
As with many data-centres, ours also has diesel
generator backup and a ‘ups’ the size of a small
building should the power be cut off.
3. Mechanical failure of the server
Gconnect use purpose-built, rack-mount servers
with multiple processors, redundant hot
swappable power supplies and hard disks in RAID.
4. Server resource overload
Unlike many smaller providers, Gconnect use many
single purpose machines, as opposed to multi
purpose servers. The load on the machines is
constantly monitored, and new resources added as
required.
Functionality means that the system can perform
the jobs that you want, such as mail archiving,
spam screening, virus checking and a host of
other ‘little’ things that make your life
easier. Gconnect manually configure and maintain
our own servers, and are therefore able to make
custom configurations for specific customer

Speed – Gconnect use a number of MTA’s but our
mainstay is ‘Sendmail’ running on the FreeBSD
operating system. These single purpose machines
